Bernice

After successfully completing City & Guilds Creative Embroidery, Bernice continued to work with textiles until Art Journaling and Mixed Media called. She particularly enjoys making books and has taught online workshops making altered books and handmade themed books.

Her return to textile art came through making a fabric and mixed media book and she is now developing work that combines her mixed media and creative embroidery skills.

In seeking to find her own voice Bernice spent a year working with a limited colour palette and mostly on the theme of Venice. Now working on a Master Practitioner course, Bernice has been encouraged to work in brighter colours.

A challenge which she is enjoying.

My Mother Said
Mixed media distressed vest made with paper, fabrics, stitch and beads.

On the first layer I wrote about my mother disapproving of even a bra strap showing, unlike now when almost anything goes!

Layers of paper, ribbon, fabric and mixed media items were hand and machine stitched.

The Road Not Taken
Layers of hand dyed linen, cotton, silk, nuno felt, scrim & Tyvek on Lutradur. Plus hand dyed threads to add interest & texture.

Hidden Support
A personal journey about my breaking my fingers in 2018.
The base of the piece is made from the two muslin slings I was given. I kept a photo diary of my treatment and recovery and most of these photos were printed out on cotton fabric. The top layer is made from the hospital appointment letters. The tags show the dates of the appointments up to December 31st.
The piece was machine stitched.

Becca

In the past year, my work has been informed by my own experiences of invisible disability and illness. Exploring the differences in these experiences with others, I've been keen to reveal the emotions behind the facade and this has led me to develop an interest in layers, the depth that can be created and the shadows that can be formed.

I enjoy working with a range of materials from the traditional cloth to the more unconventional such as cassette tape. Using such materials enables me to look at using a variety of techniques from the more expected technique of stitch to the more unexpected techniques in textiles such as silversmithing.

Example of work in progress:

'Hidden Pain'
invisible stitch and distressed layers of hand dyed scrim emphasising the web like spread of chronic pain

Jan

We are sad to announce that Jan died in March 2018. Her family have kindly given us permission to continue to display Jan’s work. Jan was a great friend and an inspiration to all of us in Traverse.

Jan began working with textiles as a child and spent many years making patchwork quilts and wall hangings. She enjoyed sharing her expertise with others, running classes teaching traditional patchwork quilting.

However, more recently she decided to extend her skills beyond this field and enjoyed the challenge of developing the use of mixed media in her work.

Her work often developed from her imagination rather than ‘real life’ and was often inspired by favourite stories.
